Seguimos para a Haghia Sofia.
Já apanhamos alguma fila, mas anda bem. Há uns senhores que vão à fila aliciar para se entrar com eles (eles são guias) e assim passas a fila - mas não é necessário. A fila ia até ao repuxo da praça Sultanahmet e andou bastante rápido. Em 15 min estávamos a comprar o bilhete.
Apesar de muitos lhe chamarem Igreja de Santa Sofia não é esta a tradução, a tradução correcta é Igreja da Sagrada Sabedoria, apesar de actualmente não ser uma igreja.
Tem mais de 1400 anos. Foi construída no séc. VI durante o império bizantino para ser a Catedral de Constantinopla. No séc XV os Otomanos transformaram-na numa Mesquita (os minaretes, as fontes são desta altura). Estas obras transformaram-na, não sendo ela, neste momento idêntica ao que era inicialmente.
Em 1935 foi transformada em Museu.
We continued to Haghia Sofia.
There was a small queue. There were some guys asking you to skip the queue and enter with them (they are guides) - but that is not necessary. We stayed 15min in the queue to buy the ticket (the queue went to the fountain of Sultanahmet square).
While many call it the Church of St. Sophia that is not the correct translation. The translation should be Church of the Holy Wisdom, although it’s no longer a church.
It is more than 1400 years old. It was built in the 7th century during the Byzantine Empire to be the Constantinople’s Cathedral. In the 15th century the Ottomans turned it into a mosque. These works changed it.
In 1935 it was converted into a museum.
O nártex (zona de entrada) é enorme, tem 56m de comprimento e tem uma cúpula com diâmetro de 31m, situada a 53m do chão, cheia de mosaicos simétricos.
Em cada um dos cantos/base da cúpula encontram-se Serafins. Estes são o mais elevado dos 9 coros angélicos, um dos mais próximos de Deus. São figuras com 3 pares de asas que proclamam em alta voz a glória de Deus. Estes Serafins, apesar de descritos como figuras humanas, são representados de forma abstrata (os princípios muçulmanos proíbem a reprodução da figura humana).
The narthex is huge, it is 56m long and a dome with a diameter of 31m. It is 53m hight and it is filled with symmetrical tiling.
In each corner / base of the dome, there are Serafins. These are the highest of the nine angelic choirs, the closest to God. There are figures with three pairs of wings that proclaim loud the glory of God. These Seraphim are described as human figures and here they are represented in abstract form because Muslim principles forbid the reproduction of the human figure.
No altar, tanto podemos ver em cima um Painel de Mosaico da Virgem com o Menino (foto abaixo à esquerda) como os elementos muçulmanos que foram acrescentados posteriormente - as placas redondas com elementos de caligrafia com um dos 99 nomes de Alá
Podemos também ver no altar o Mihrab - que define a direção de Meca, para onde se devem dirigir as orações e o púlpito com uma escadaria, torre e porta, de onde é realizado o sermão (foto abaixo à direita).
Upon the Altar we can see a Panel with Mosaics of the Virgin and Child (photo below left) and as Muslims elements that were added later - the round plates where one of the 99 names of Allah is written.
At the Alter there´s also the Mihrab - that defines the direction of Mecca (where to pray) and the pulpit with a staircase, tower and gate, where the sermon is done (photo below right).
No piso de cima encontram-se as galerias, onde se podem encontrar a maioria dos mosaicos bizantinos. Deixo um como exemplo - Jesus o criador do universo - do séc XI (foto abaixo).
Upstairs there are the galleries, where you can find most of the Byzantine mosaics. I leave one as an example - Jesus the creator of the universe - 11th century (photo below).
Das janelas que há nas galerias conseguimos ter uma vista bonita sobre a Mesquita Azul (foto abaixo).
From the windows in the galleries there is a beautiful view of the Blue Mosque (photo below).
Há uma bonita fonte da purificação/ablução na Haghia Sophia, comum a todas as mesquitas. É onde se sentam os homens, antes de entrar para a mesquita, tiram os sapatos, lavam os pés, as mãos e os braços até aos cotovelos, o rosto, orelhas, pescoço e parte de trás da cabeça para se purificarem física e espiritualmente para a oração.
Esta fonte é um excelente exemplo do estilo Rococó turco (foto abaixo).
There is a beautiful ablution fountain in Haghia Sophia, common to all mosques. Men sit here before entering the mosque, take off their shoes, wash their feet, hands, arms, face, ears, neck and back of the head to clean themselves physically and spiritually for prayer.
This fountain is an excellent example of the Rococo turkish style (photo below).

Fomos almoçar. Almoçamos num restaurante bem perto da Basílica Cisterna, onde íamos a seguir. Nessa rua há imensos restaurantes.
Escolhemos o Medusa, tinha menus em todas as línguas e a comida pareceu-nos fantástica! Acertamos! Estava tudo óptimo e fomos servidos relativamente rápido!
A relação qualidade/preço é fantástica!
Eu pedi Hummus com cordeiro (foto abaixo), era um petisco, e estava óptimo, mas não necessitei de um prato principal. Pedimos dois pratos principais e dois petiscos e ficamos todos muito satisfeitos.
We went to lunch. We had lunch at a restaurant right near the Basilica Cistern, where we were going next. On this street there are many restaurants.
We chose Medusa, it had menus in all languages and the food seemed fantastic to us! Everything was great and we were served relatively fast!
The price / quality is fantastic!
I ordered hummus with lamb (pictured below), was an appetizer, and it was perfect. I didn’t need a main dish. We ordered two main dishes and two appetizers and we were all very pleased.
Fomos de barriga cheia à Basílica Cisterna ou Cisterna de Yerebatan, apanhamos uma fila grande na entrada, demoramos mais de 20min para comprar o bilhete.
We went to the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Cistern) and we stood on a large queue at the entrance, it took us more than 20 minutes to buy the ticket.
Mas depois de entrar, vale cada minuto de espera. Assim que começamos a descer a escada, os ouvidos sentem logo o barulho da água, sons clássicos, da água a cair, vindos de vários lados! E quando vemos a enorme quantidade de colunas (336! com 8m de altura) e a água transparente cheia de peixinhos ficamos encantados.
A capacidade total de armazenamento de água é de 80mil metros cúbicos.
Uma obra de arte Bizantina, construída em 532 que armazenava a água trazida pelo aqueduto de Valens. Foi utilizada até ao século XIX.
Houve obras de restauração e a cisterna foi aberta ao público, sendo a visita feita por passadeiras suspensas. Apenas 2/3 da cisterna podem ser visitados.
But after going downstairs it worth every minute of waiting. When we started down the stairs, we ear the noise of the water, with classic sounds of water falling from various sides! And when we see the huge amount of columns (336! 8m high!) and transparent water full of fish we were delighted.
The total storage capacity of water is 80 thousand cubic meters.
A work of Byzantine art, built in 532, stored water brought by aqueduct of Valens. It was used until the 19th century.
There were restoration works and the tank was opened to the public. We visited the cistern walking on suspended walkways. Only 2/3 of the tank can be visited.
No final, do lado esquerdo, encontramos duas colunas em que a base são cabeças de Medusa, uma virada ao contrário e outra de lado. Medusa foi um mito, a mulher que transformava os seus cabelos em cobras e qualquer um que olhasse para ela virava pedra. Não se conhece o motivo das cabeças estarem nestas posições.
At the end, on the left, there are two columns with bases of Medusa’s heads, one turned upside down and the other left side. Medusa was a myth, the woman who turned her hair into snakes and anyone who looked at her turned into a stone. People don’t know why the heads are in these positions.
