The last visit of the day was Galata Tower.
The queue was huge, it took us about 45min to buy the tickets. After that there was another queue upside, people walking very slowly around the tower (we were waiting most of the time, because everyone wants to take the best picture!). So, the visit took us more than 1h30.

(foto acima)

We went down and we stopped at the pier, before crossing Galata Bridge to eat. There are men at the pier selling sandwiches with fresh salad and fish! They take the fish pimples really quickly! And the sandwich is a delight! (pictured above)

We crossed the bridge and watched the sunset on the bridge (picture above) . Then we walked to the hotel, but still had some time to enjoy the view from the bridge to Suleymaniye Mosque (picture below) - Eminonu.

Istambul (Istanbul) - Mesquita Azul (Blue Mosque) e Hipódromo (Hippodrome)

Two of the main monuments of Istanbul are face to face, the Blue Mosque (picture above) and the Haghia Sophia (picture below). Among them there is a beautiful square - Sultanahmet - with a fountain in the middle.
We saw the fountain and then we went to the Blue Mosque.

We arrived at the Blue Mosque at 3:30 pm which was not a prayer time, so we didn’t have to wait and we immediately started our visit.
The Blue Mosque was built by Sultan Ahmet I between 1609 and 1916. The Sultan wanted a better Mosque than Haghia Sophia, bigger and prettier. It is the only mosque with 6 minarets. It has natural light which enters through more than 250 windows and 36 domes.

The mosque (above) with the 6 minarets and the square with the ablution fountain.

Its name is due to the fact that it has so many blue Iznik tiles inside, more than 20 thousands. It is one of the most important and beautiful religious buildings in the world.

Above it is a picture of one of the minarets with the speakers.
It is announced by the speaker of the minarets the time of the 5 prayers. The call begins with the phrase "Allah is big. There is no other God beyond Allah and Muhammad is his prophet." The call lasts several minutes and it’s chanted from Blue Mosque first and from Haghia Sophia next.
All prayers are facing Mecca.

More information about Blue Mosque:
The mosque is open every day.
Closes on Prayers time (there are 5 prayers day).
We have to cover the shoulders and hair with a scarf and take off the shoes (photo above). If you are dressed with a skirt / dress / shorts you have to put a scarf around the legs! It is not a problem if you haven’t got a scarf because they have lots of clothes there to borrow.
The visit is relatively fast, it takes less than 1h.

We came out to the other side and we went to the Hippodrome.
Today it is just a square but it has a great historical importance since at that time of the Byzantine Empire it was the Hippodrome of Constantinople that had space for 100,000 people. There are some monuments that take us back to the ancient times, like the Egyptian obelisk (with only a third of its original size) and the spine of the serpent (picture above).

The day I’ve planned has ended and it was still early (5 pm), so I figured we could go to a turkish bath or maybe continue to visit places i’ve scheduled to the next day.
We chose to continue our visit.
We caught the tram to Sultanahmet and traveled four stops to Karakoy (4TL each ticket).

Istambul (Istanbul) - Haghia Sophia e Basílica Cisterna (Basilica Cistern)

We continued to Haghia Sofia.
There was a small queue. There were some guys asking you to skip the queue and enter with them (they are guides) - but that is not necessary. We stayed 15min in the queue to buy the ticket (the queue went to the fountain of Sultanahmet square).

While many call it the Church of St. Sophia that is not the correct translation. The translation should be Church of the Holy Wisdom, although it’s no longer a church.
It is more than 1400 years old. It was built in the 7th century during the Byzantine Empire to be the Constantinople’s Cathedral. In the 15th century the Ottomans turned it into a mosque. These works   changed it.

In 1935 it was converted into a museum.

The narthex is huge, it is 56m long and a dome with a diameter of 31m. It is 53m hight and it is filled with symmetrical tiling.
In each corner / base of the dome, there are Serafins. These are the highest of the nine angelic choirs, the closest to God. There are figures with three pairs of wings that proclaim loud the glory of God. These Seraphim are described as human figures and here they are represented in abstract form because Muslim principles forbid the reproduction of the human figure.

Upon the Altar we can see a Panel with Mosaics of the Virgin and Child (photo below left) and as Muslims elements that were added later - the round plates where one of the 99 names of Allah is written.
At the Alter there´s also the Mihrab - that defines the direction of Mecca (where to pray) and the pulpit with a staircase, tower and gate, where the sermon is done (photo below right).

Upstairs there are the galleries, where you can find most of the Byzantine mosaics. I leave one as an example - Jesus the creator of the universe - 11th century (photo below).

From the windows in the galleries there is a beautiful view of the Blue Mosque (photo below).

There is a beautiful ablution fountain in Haghia Sophia, common to all mosques. Men sit here before entering the mosque, take off their shoes, wash their feet, hands, arms, face, ears, neck and back of the head to clean themselves physically and spiritually for prayer.
This fountain is an excellent example of the Rococo turkish style (photo below).

The ticket price was 30TL.
The visit lasted about 1h.

Acertamos! Estava tudo óptimo e fomos servidos relativamente rápido!
A relação qualidade/preço é fantástica!

We went to lunch. We had lunch at a restaurant right near the Basilica Cistern, where we were going next. On this street there are many restaurants.
We chose Medusa, it had menus in all languages and the food seemed fantastic to us! Everything was great and we were served relatively fast!
The price / quality is fantastic!
I ordered hummus with lamb (pictured below), was an appetizer, and it was perfect. I didn’t need a main dish. We ordered two main dishes and two appetizers and we were all very pleased.

We went to the Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Cistern) and we stood  on a large queue at the entrance, it took us more than 20 minutes to buy the ticket.

But after going downstairs it worth every minute of waiting. When we started down the stairs, we ear the noise of the water, with classic sounds of water falling from various sides! And when we see the huge amount of columns (336! 8m high!) and transparent water full of fish we were delighted.
The total storage capacity of water is 80 thousand cubic meters.
A work of Byzantine art, built in 532, stored water brought by aqueduct of Valens. It was used until the 19th century.
There were restoration works and the tank was opened to the public. We visited the cistern walking on suspended walkways. Only 2/3 of the tank can be visited.

At the end, on the left, there are two columns with bases of Medusa’s heads, one turned upside down and the other left side. Medusa was a myth, the woman who turned her hair into snakes and anyone who looked at her turned into a stone. People don’t know why the heads are in these positions.

Istambul (Istanbul) - Palácio Topkapi (Topkapi Palace)

Dia 1 / Day 1

We started our journey early, at 9am, with the Topkapi Palace to avoid the queues.

Between 1459 and 1465 Mehmet II, after conquering Constantinople, built this palace as his primary residence. It is located in a strategic area of the Bosphorus, with magnificent views of the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara,
The palace has an Ottoman architecture with a huge area, with lots of pavilions, courtyards, gardens and the harem (a total area of 700 000 m2). At the end of the garden it has fabulous views to the Bosphorus.
It was the official residence of the Sultans about 400 years, until the Sultan Abdul Mecid I moved to the Dolmabahçe Palace (an European style palace).
In 1924 the palace was transformed into a museum.

First, we went through the Imperial Gate to enter in the first courtyard of the Palace, with Haghia Eirene on the left. Now the first courtyard is plenty of various tourist shops and cars.

At the end of the first courtyard we have the entrance to the palace by the Gate of Salutations (pictured above), which allows access to the 2nd courtyard of the palace, where the most important ceremonies were held.

On the left of the 2nd courtyard there is the entrance to the Harem (we visited the Harem after visiting the Palace) and the collection of weapons, which is fantastic! On the right there are the kitchens (which were closed). In front there is the Gate of Felicity or Gate of White Eunuchs - main entrance in the fields of the Sultan (pictured above).

After crossing the Gate of Felicity we are in the 3rd courtyard. The Audience Chamber (pictured above) is just in front of the Gate. Ahead is the Library of Ahmet III (which was closed, with works) and on the right the exhibition of imperial costumes and then the treasury.
The treasury is fantastic, it is also the exhibition with more people and that takes more time to see! A collection of thousands of precious and semi-precious stones. Some of the pieces were offered by other diplomats.
The dagger with 3 emeralds on cable is really appreciated. It was a gift from the Sultan Mahmud I to the Shah of Persia (Nadir Shah) but this has never been delivered since he died. This dagger can be seen in the 2nd area.
The most prized piece is a pear-shaped diamond of 86 carats (Diamond Kaşıkçı). It's a huge diamond in the center, surrounded by 49 smaller diamonds. This can be found in the 3rd room.
Thrones of gold can also be seen in the 3rd and 4th rooms.

The view through the Bosphorus, in the middle of treasury exhibition (photo above).

At the end of treasury exhibition we went down to the 4th courtyard the area of the private apartments of the sultans and some beautiful gardens. On the right there is a restaurant and at the left  there are several pavilions!

The Sofa Pavilion (pictured above) is a beautiful place for me. It was used by the sultans to see sport events and to have meetings. Today is an example in the history of architecture as Turkish Rococo.

The Baghdad Pavilion was built by Murat IV in 1636 to commemorate the conquest of Baghdad.
It is one of the most interesting pavilions of the palace with an octagonal structure with columns around. There is a domain of blue tiles, inside and outside the Pavilion (pictured above).

In front of the Baghdad Pavilion is the Iftariye Pavilion. This is a small counter covered with gilded bronze which has stunning views to the Golden Horn and Galata Tower (pictured above).
This was the place where the Sultan spent his late  afternoons during the Ramadan, he stood under the cover, surrounded by the court and waited for the sunset to break the fast and make the first meal of the day.

After a breathtaking view, we traveled to the Circumcision Pavilion (pictured above). This has a door in granite, with golden letters on the top and lovely tiles that leave anyone open-mouthed. The entire interior is also covered with several panels of tiles, mainly blue, both on the walls and ceiling.
It was the place used for circumcision (religious Islam tradition to cleanliness and purity) of the princes (sons of the Sultan).

Then we went back to the 2nd courtyard to visit the Harem, one of the largest and most important areas of the palace.
The meaning of the word Harem in Arabic is "a sacred place where not everyone is allowed to enter." In Ottoman tradition means the family of the Sultan and the space where they live.
The Sultan lived in the harem with his wives, brothers and sisters, children, his mother, the concubines and black eunuchs. The mother was the most powerful woman in the harem and she choses the women to his son (the Sultan).
The concubines - most beautiful slaves captured in war - had the dream of one day becoming the favorite of the Sultan, give him a son which, on occasion, led to marriage. They were educated in the Harem, so they had a disciplined education and could be future wives of the Sultan. There are records that this Harem had over 1000 concubines.
The black eunuchs (castrated black men) were the protectors of the Harem.

Over the years there have been several changes according to the Sultan. Currently the Harem consists of 300 rooms, 9 bathrooms, 2 mosques, a hospital, a laundry room, and numerous rooms of different types.

O pátio das concubinas e esposas preferidas (foto acima).

The courtyard of wives and preferred concubines (pictured above).

The private room of Sultan Murat III (pictured above) is the oldest and finest of the Harem. It was built in 1579 and is one of the most splendid examples of classical Ottoman architecture in the late sixteenth century.
It is a room with symmetrical detail in predominantly blue and red tiles and has a large dome. The two thrones are in gilded wood from Ottoman Baroque style of the eighteenth century.

These Prince apartments(pictured above) were used as the private chamber of the crown princes from the eighteenth century. The walls are decorated with two rows of overlapping windows grouped in sets of three. The stained glass windows with pointed arches of the upper row of windows were renovated. The golden ornaments hand-drawn on the tissue lining the wooden ceiling are original. The walls, inside and outside are covered by beautifully blue tiled.

E ainda há tantas mais fotografias!

And there are so much pictures!
